How to Type Japanese on Any Device

Typing Japanese uses an Input Method Editor (IME). You type in romaji, the IME converts it to hiragana, and then you select the kanji you want. Here's the setup for every device.

Step 1: Add Japanese language

  1. Open SettingsTime & LanguageLanguage & Region
  2. Click Add a language
  3. Search for 日本語 (Japanese) and select it
  4. Check Install language pack and click Install

Step 2: Switch input language

Press Windows key + Space to cycle through input languages. Look for the IME icon (あ) in the taskbar.

Step 3: Type Japanese

  1. Click the IME icon → select Hiragana mode
  2. Type romaji → it converts to hiragana automatically: nihongo → にほんご
  3. Press Space to see kanji candidates: にほんご → 日本語
  4. Press Enter to confirm

Recommended: Install Google Japanese Input — it has better kanji predictions than the built-in Microsoft IME.

Common mistake
