Real dialogue: asking for directions to a convenience store

A (visitor): すみません、この近くにコンビニはありますか。

Sumimasen, kono chikaku ni konbini wa arimasu ka.

Excuse me, is there a convenience store near here?

B (local): はい、あります。この道をまっすぐ行って、一つ目の信号を右に曲がってください。

Hai, arimasu. Kono michi wo massugu itte, hitotsu me no shingou wo migi ni magatte kudasai.

Yes, there is. Go straight along this road and turn right at the first traffic light.

A: 右に曲がった後はどうすればいいですか。

Migi ni magatta ato wa dou sureba ii desu ka.

What should I do after turning right?

B: 少し歩くと、左側にコンビニが見えます。徒歩で3分くらいです。

Sukoshi aruku to, hidarigawa ni konbini ga miemasu. Toho de san-pun kurai desu.

Walk a little and you'll see the convenience store on the left side. It's about a 3-minute walk.

A: ありがとうございます。助かりました!

Arigatou gozaimasu. Tasukarimashita!

Thank you so much. You've been a great help!

Common mistakes: に vs で with direction verbs

曲がる (to turn) always takes に

The particle に marks the direction of movement. 曲がる (to turn) is a movement verb, so it takes に for the direction:

行く (to go) — に vs で vs まで

渡る (to cross) — always takes を

Frequently asked questions

How do you ask "where is the station" in Japanese?

駅はどこですか (eki wa doko desu ka) is the standard form. More politely: 駅はどこにありますか. To ask how to get there: 駅まで行くにはどうすればいいですか. Always start with すみません to get attention.

What is the difference between に and で with 曲がる?

With 曲がる (to turn), always use に: 右に曲がってください (turn right). The particle に marks the direction of movement. Using で with 曲がる is incorrect.

How do you say "go straight" in Japanese?

まっすぐ行ってください (massugu itte kudasai) — please go straight. まっすぐ進んでください (proceed straight) is also correct. まっすぐ is the adverb for "straight ahead."

How do you say "turn left" and "turn right" in Japanese?

Turn right: 右に曲がってください (migi ni magatte kudasai). Turn left: 左に曲がってください (hidari ni magatte kudasai). The particle is always に — do not use で.

What are useful landmarks to know in Japanese?

The most useful are: 駅 (station), コンビニ (convenience store), 信号 (traffic light), 交差点 (intersection), 横断歩道 (crosswalk), 橋 (bridge), 公園 (park), 郵便局 (post office). Convenience stores (コンビニ) are everywhere in Japan and make the best landmarks.
